What Is a Matrix Question and How Is It Used?
A matrix is a suitable question type when you want to ask multiple sub-questions that all share the same set of answer options.
How to Configure a Matrix
At the top of the matrix dialog box, you'll find a range of options. Below is an overview of what each option does, along with the basic setup process.
Enter the question title and your desired answer choices.
Double-click the top row to add your question, then enter the response options.
Use the Tab key on your keyboard to move between fields.
To add a new row, click “Add row”. To add a new column, click “Add column”.
Rows do not need to be added in the final order—you can rearrange them afterward. Simply drag the dotted square on the left of the row and drop it in the desired position.
Columns, however, are static and cannot be rearranged once created.
Each row and column also includes a delete option for removing items.
Note: We strongly recommend not deleting any answer options after your survey has been activated and responses have been collected, as this may result in data loss.
Additional Configuration Options
Required
Use this option if the question must be answered in order for the respondent to proceed. If the respondent tries to move on without answering, a warning message will be displayed.
Double Matrix
Use this to measure multiple attributes side by side for each question item.
Classic Layout
When selected, your matrix will appear in a classic table format.
Example views are shown below.
Ranking
Prevents respondents from selecting the same answer multiple times.
The number of columns determines the ranking scale, and each option can be chosen only once per row—ideal for prioritization.
Weighting
Allows you to assign weights to answer options. This enables the calculation of reference values, such as mean and standard deviation, in your report.
Enter the desired weight into the small box next to each answer option.
Leaving the box empty excludes the option from weighted calculations.
Assigning a weight of 0 includes the option but reduces its impact compared to options weighted higher.
Weights can be added before, during, or after the survey is live. The results are updated immediately.
Random Order
Randomizes the order of the answer options for each respondent.
Add Multiple
Use this option if you need to enter many answer options at once.
Click this setting and enter all options into a single field, separated by line breaks. This helps you avoid adding each item individually.
Saving and Previewing
Once you are satisfied with your matrix setup:
Click “Save”.
Preview the page by clicking the eye icon in the top right corner to confirm that everything appears as expected.
